He had a lackluster basketball career as a kid in Hartselle, which led to him becoming a little league parent when his daughter played. Emily became a very successful player despite Greg’s suggestions about how to play basketball. She was a part of a team that placed second in the AAU nationals and won the state sports festival three years in a row.

While in college, he worked at WCFT and then joined WVTM in Birmingham. His visit to Birmingham television ignited his interest in NASCAR and taught him that weathermen rarely pick up the tab at lunch. Greg then moved to Richmond, Virginia, where he worked at WRIC television. Greg collaborated with Chip Tarkenton, the nephew of NFL legend Fran Tarkenton, at the plant.

When Fran and Greg got into a heated argument about the NFL Greats’ lack of Super Bowl success at Thanksgiving, his relationship with Chip came to an end. Greg returned to Huntsville after eight years in Richmond, where he worked in sports and morning news. Greg had to quit television after 25 years. Greg had the itch to take a sabbatical after 25 years of television and worked for United Way of Madison County for 15 months.
