Hayes serves at WHNT as a news anchor of the 6 and 10 pm evening newscasts. He also serves as the managing editor. He started as a reporter at WHNT, but after a few weeks, he was producing and anchoring the weekend newscasts. Jerry switched to the 6 and 10 main anchor positions in November 1983 after serving as a 10 o’clock co-anchor and then noon anchor. He started anchoring a new newscast at 6:30 p.m. after the tornadoes of April 27, 2011. He wanted a transition after more than 30 years of anchoring the late newscast in the fall of 2016.
Hayes now co-anchors the weeknight newscasts at 4 and 6:30 p.m. with Christine Killimayer. They not only sit next to each other in the newsroom, but they also share the anchor desk! There is never a boring moment, according to Jerry. Jerry has traveled the globe in search of stories for WHNT NEWS 19. He’s covered the White House and carried backstories from as far as St. Petersburg, Russia. Mark Hamill and Carol Burnett are only two of the celebrities he’s met.
But interviewing and getting to know the boys in the band from Fort Payne are some of his favorite memories. Jerry was the first news reporter to speak with Alabama members. Hayes is a country music fanatic. He was also invited to be a guest announcer during a live segment of the Grand Ole Opry in 2008 and 2010. Hayes was ecstatic to be a part of the radio program that he and his great grandfather used to listen to on Saturday nights.
He landed an internship at WTVF, the CBS affiliate in Nashville while in college. Hayes was hired as the News Department’s chief videotape editor after graduation. He relocated to Huntsville in the fall of 1978. Throughout his work as a journalist, Jerry has received several awards. He’s been nominated for nine Emmys and won two of them! The Nashville/Midsouth Chapter of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences inducted him into the Silver Circle in 2010. Inductees are recognized for their contributions to the entertainment industry over a period of 25 years or more.
In 2005, 2006, 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018, Jerry won the Associated Press Television Award for Best News Anchor in Alabama. Jerry was also awarded the Abby award for News Anchor of the Year by the Alabama Broadcasters Association in 2008, 2011, and 2013. He also received an Abby award in 2012 for a feature story titled “A Father’s Love.” In 2013, Jerry received a Region 12 Edward R. Murrow Award for Best Sports Reporting. When coming to his education, he holds a degree which he obtained from Middle Tennessee State University.
