Donovan started his career at WWOR-TV in Secaucus, New Jersey, as a news department intern. He worked in a number of positions at WWOR over a period of six years, including those of news writer and Emmy-nominated field editor. He did this while working in the aviation industry as well.

In 2004, the 15-time Emmy Award-winner joined CBS 3 as its market reporter, ‘On Your Side.’ After distinguishing himself with his unforgettable coverage of Pope Francis’ visit to Philadelphia in 2015, he stepped up to the anchor desk in April 2016 to relaunch the station’s morning newscast.

Jim left the Big Apple in 1997 to launch an investigative unit at WGHP-TV in High Point, North Carolina, a highly rated Fox television station. The Better Business Bureau called him an “Outstanding Consumer Reporter” while working in North Carolina.

One of his most famous stories at WGHP included a weekly segment where he helped reunite people with unclaimed funds. He helped refund $1.4 million dollars to viewers who were owed money by the North Carolina unclaimed property network over the course of one year.

In 2000, WBNS-TV, the CBS affiliate in Columbus, Ohio, hired Donovan. He worked as the station’s lead consumer reporter at WBNS. While there, he won an Emmy Award for his consumer investigations and reporting and a further five Emmy nominations. The Ohio Attorney General’s Office accepted his activism on behalf of his viewers.

His on-air duties also include the customer beat, where he and his staff continue to address thousands of viewers in the Delaware Valley’s consumer-related grievances. Their work has received accolades from the Better Business Bureau to the Associated Press from various organizations.

In 1993, Donovan decided to clip his airline wings and focus full-time on his broadcasting career. As a research coordinator, he joined WNBC-TV, New York City’s NBC flagship station. It was there that he put his aviation expertise to good use and won his first Emmy Award for a plane crash survival investigation report.

In 1994, as an investigative producer and consumer reporter for “Steals & Deals,” a nightly consumer news show, Donovan made the transition to network television and joined NBC’s cable business network, CNBC. Donovan established his passion for consumer advocacy at CNBC and his job there won him a nomination for National Cable Ace and helped him to contribute reports to NBC’s Today Show.

Jim, a native of Staten Island, New York, is a graduate of Seton Hall University in South Orange, New Jersey, where he earned a Communication Bachelor of Arts degree. Involved in the community, he volunteers for several local charities, including MANNA, CARIE, and the Mazzoni Center. In 2015, in recognition of his body of work and community service, he was incorporated into the Broadcast Pioneers of Philadelphia’s Hall of Fame.

Donovan was employed by People Express Airlines while in college in the mid-1980s. He went to work as a domestic and international flight attendant for People Express and later with Continental Airlines after an airline merger. He will most possibly be found on a plane flying to different destinations from London to Tahiti when he was not employed in the WWOR newsroom.
