Luke Dorris Career

Luke enrolled in college to study automotive engineering and landed a part-time job in a warehouse for beer delivery, where he worked a forklift after classes to load beer trucks. This was where his whole life changed. When a storm swept in and started raining, he worked an unusually hot summer evening in the factory, then hailed so hard that cars from the nearby state highway pulled into the parking lot to ride out the storm. On one of the cars, the awning on the front of the building blew off and landed.

An awful creak was created by the aluminum-sided warehouse and then partially blown down. Luke thought a storm was reaching him, but he later found out that it was a “microburst,” or severe straight-line winds greater than 90 mph. Luke moved to the University of Oklahoma, intrigued as much as he was frightened, where he received a Bachelor of Science in meteorology and chased a few storms when he could. He was also lucky enough to be an intern at KWTV in Oklahoma City with Gary England, Michael Armstrong, and the weather team.

Luke moved to Lincoln, Nebraska, where he ultimately became KLKN’s chief meteorologist. Many tornadoes, extreme thunderstorms, and snowstorms covered him throughout his time there. He also received the American Meteorological Society’s accredited broadcast meteorologist designation, which is the highest qualification available to broadcast meteorologists.
