Mullen serves at NBC 7 News as a co-anchor for the weeknight newscasts at 5, 6, and 11 PM, alongside Monica Dean and Catherine Garcia. Before his role as a weeknight anchor at NBC 7, he worked for NBC News as a Chief Asia correspondent based in Beijing. In that capacity, he often covered notable Chinese and Asian latest events with The Olympics– filing in-depth reports for CNBC, The Today Show, NBC Nightly News, and MSNBC.
He was the 1st reporter to provide live coverage from Tiananmen Square, in the run-up to the Olympics of 2008, since the crackdown of the Chinese government on student demonstrators in the year 1989. While at NBC News, he won an Emmy Award for his reporting work. As a foreign and domestic correspondent for NBC News, he got opportunities to travel to many countries across the globe.
Since joining NBC 7, his assignments have also included coverage from various zones of war. He earned recognition for his report on the Kurd’s 1st-ever vote in Iraq’s historic election. Mullen has also reported on stories in Europe and the Middle East, as well as throughout the United States. Some of these stories include The California Wildfires, the aftermath of 9/11, and Hurricane Katrina.
Before joining the NBC network, he worked for ABC News in New York as an anchor for America This Morning and World News Now. Also, he served as a correspondent for Good Morning America and World News Tonight, on ABC News.
Mullen started his career in the year 1987 after college, where he worked for WLOX-TV in Mississippi. After that, he joined KDFW-TV in Dallas, Texas, KING-TV in Seattle, Washington DC, and KRON-TV in San Francisco, California.
Throughout his career, he has earned many regional and national awards for his work as a reporter and anchor. Some of the awards include a National Emmy Award for Outstanding News Coverage (while at NBC) and being named “Outstanding Young Journalist of the Year” by The Society of Professional Journalists.
