Michael Wooten Career
West Virginia is her native home. He received the prestigious Yeager Scholarship to attend Marshall University (Go Herd!) where he earned a degree in Broadcast Journalism graduating Summa Cum Laude. In addition, e also attended Universidad Antonio de Nebrija in Madrid, Spain, and Oxford University in England.
His career in journalism began in WSAZ-TV an NBC affiliate where he first served as a producer and later on he became a reporter and weekend, evening anchor. In addition, his most memorable moment was when he had the opportunity to sit down with Hillary Clinton and with then-Senators Barack Obama on the same day.
He relocated to Buffalo a short while before the 2009 crash of Continental Flight 3407, which was his first story to cover in Western New York. He had the privilege of reporting on the families’ multiple journeys to Washington, D.C., where they fought for tougher airline regulations to prevent another tragedy later on.
Over the past ten years, he has reported on some of the biggest stories in the country. In July 2012, he covered; Colorado movie theater massacre, and the Aurora. Furthermore, after there was a school shooting in Chardon, Ohio, he did a report on the event.
For his report on hydraulic fracturing or fracking, in New York State, he was awarded an Emmy Award and is a nominee for a number of other Emmy awards. Furthermore, he has won many Associated Press awards including; one for Best Continuing Coverage, and two for Best Enterprise Reporting. A regional Edward R. Murrow award was awarded to WGRZ in 2015, for his investigative reporter at the Erie County Sheriff’s Office on “Cell Phone Spying.” Prior to, regional Edward R. Murrow award for innovation in 2018, for his outstanding work.
During his downtime, he enjoys watching sports as he is a fan, traveling throughout Western New York and around the world, and enjoying the summer.
