Elgas joined ABC7 Chicago with more than two decades of news experience. Before his time at ABC 7 Chicago, he worked for NBC 5 in Chicago as an anchor for the early afternoon news and a reporter for the late evening news.
Elgas has broadcast two Olympics: the 2006 Winter Games in Torino, Italy, and the 2014 Olympics in Sochi, Russia. He went to Washington, D.C., for the State of the Union. Also, he broadcast breaking news in California and Texas for ABC 7. However, his most unforgettable assignment was covering the historic World Series win by the Chicago Cubs in 2016 with Mark Giangreco and Jim Rose in Cleveland.
Before returning to Chicago in 2002, Elgas worked for ABC 7 in El Paso, Texas. He started his tenure there in 1998 as a weekend anchor. He then co-anchored the morning show from 2000 to 2002.
