He also interned at WCTV, the local CBS affiliate in Tallahassee, Florida. Upon graduation, he headed to Hattiesburg, Mississippi at WDAM to serve as the Weekend Meteorologist. In the course of his time in Mississippi, he reported a wide range of weather from severe weather and hurricanes to snow and extreme heat. In February 2013 he reported an EF-4 tornado that wreaked havoc through south Mississippi, one of his memorable experiences. Whitehurst traveled dozens of miles to report the storm live on-air. The tornado had winds of up to 170 mph.
