Prior to joining WMBF News, he was working at WDAM in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, a Raycom Media sister station for two years. He is a proud graduate of Florida State University in Tallahassee, Florida where he earned a Bachelor of Science in Meteorology and a minor in Mathematics. During his time there, he was a meteorologist student at 4FSU Weather daily produced, the only live, student-run half-hour weather show in the nation.

He also interned at WCTV, the local CBS affiliate in Tallahassee, Florida. Upon graduation, he headed to Hattiesburg, Mississippi at WDAM to serve as the Weekend Meteorologist. In the course of his time in Mississippi, he reported a wide range of weather from severe weather, hurricanes to snow and extreme heat.

In February 2013 he reported an EF-4 tornado that wreaked havoc through south Mississippi, one of his memorable experiences. Whitehurst traveled dozens of miles to report the storm live 0n-air. The tornado had winds of up to 170 mph.
