St. Louis is his native home. Surprisingly, Just at the age of seventeen, he had already secured his first job as a nighttime switchboard operator at KTVI-TV. He attended the University of Missouri where he graduated. His career in journalism began in Kansas City where he worked at KMBC.

Later, he had greater opportunities in terms of work as larger stations began to follow him. Additionally, he relocated to New York where he worked at CBS as the co-anchor of Up to the Minute a CBS overnight News broadcast. Also, he served as the correspondent for Eye-to-Eye alongside Connie Chung in 1993.

Moreover, he worked for the CBS Washington bureau in 1995. Later on, he served as a co-anchor of CBS News Saturday Morning in July of 1997, whereby he traveled as a reporter for the CBS Evening News alongside Dan Rather and 48 Hours. In addition, he interviewed then-President Laurent Kabila in the Democratic Republic of Congo, covered the war in Bosnia, and reported from India, The Marshall Islands, Indonesia, and Cuba.

On September 11, 2001, he was on the anchor desk with Dan Rather reporting from Ground Zero and other parts of Manhattan on the days and the weeks that followed. Furthermore, he anchored the live CBS Special Report most recently on the capture and death of Osama Bin Laden on May 1, 2011.

In his career as a journalist, he attained both local and National Emmy awards for his outstanding work. Also, he received other awards. For instance, the New York Association of Black Journalists Award for Best Documentary, the Press Club of St. Louis 18th Annual Media Person of the Year Award, the Society of Professional Journalists Sigma Delta Chi Award for his coverage of the Elian Gonzales story, and the National Association of Black Journalists Award.

In addition, The University of Missouri School of Journalism honored him with the Missouri Honor Medal in 2007. On a side note, the award has importance to him.
