Shannon Hegy Career

Hegy serves WPRI as a co-anchor of the 5, 6, 6:30, 10, and 11 p.m. newscasts. She joined the station in 2013 and has served the station for more than a half decade. She was born and reared in Windsor, Connecticut, but spent much of her childhood in Rhode Island on vacation. She’s always had a thing for the Ocean State and told her parents when she was a kid that she wanted to live here one day. Additionally, she interned at the Today Show in New York City and hosted Hofstra News Now, the school’s monthly news show, during her time there.

It was also there that she met her future husband, Matt. (They married in October of 2012.). Moreover, she obtained her first job out of college at WGGB in Springfield, Massachusetts. Furthermore, she began her career on the assignment desk and quickly rose through the ranks over her five years there. Eventually, she became an on-air reporter and then the main anchor.

In addition, she recognized anchoring as her calling after five hours of live, unscripted coverage of the terrible June 2011 tornado. She covered important issues such as the Sandy Hook school shooting and the Boston Marathon explosions while at WGGB. In addition, she chose to take the next step in her career in 2013 and joined the brilliant team at WPRI 12.

Further, she takes pleasure in being an “active anchor,” going out into the community to cover the issues that matter in addition to her duties on the anchor desk. On the other hand, she was most moved by a narrative that had a personal impact on her. Carter, then two months old at the time, was diagnosed with bacterial meningitis in September 2017.

Additionally, he heroically battled the potentially fatal infection for ten weeks in the hospital. She told 12 News viewers about Carter’s story to raise awareness of bacterial meningitis and encourage other parents to believe their intuition. Carter, thankfully, made a full recovery with no long-term consequences. In 2019, his tale received a nomination for a New England Emmy Award.

Carter’s battle, as well as the tenacity of so many other children they met during their stay at Hasbro Children’s Hospital, prompted Shannon to create Small but Strong, a documentary series on local children facing medical challenges and the community’s support. In 2020, she attained a New England Emmy nomination.

Moreover, she is active in the community and with a variety of non-profit organizations. She is a member of The Izzy Foundation’s board of directors. Making Strides Against Breast Cancer, Mothers Against Drunk Driving, Meeting Street School, Ronald McDonald House, and the Rhode Island Brain Tumor Walk are among the organizations with which she volunteers. Further, she and her family may be found at Matunuck State Beach, enjoying the sun and surf, brunching at some of their favorite Rhode Island eateries, golfing, and skiing.
