Tony Petrarca Education

The Rhode Island native grew up watching WPRI 12 and has lived in the region his entire life. During his childhood, he followed blizzards and tropical storms on his “climate divider” at home and always dreamt of being a meteorologist.
One of Petrarca’s career highlights was spending a winter weekend atop Mt. Washington. That adventure later turned into a half-hour weather documentary entitled “On Top Of New England,” which was nominated for an Emmy.
Over the past 3 decades, Petrarca has forecast everything in New England, including blizzards, the Historic Floods of 2010, Tropical Storm Irene, several Nor’easters, many severe thunderstorms, the occasional tornado threat, as well as the Blizzards of 2013 and 2015. Additionally, he broadcast the 1995-1996 winter that brought over 100 inches of snow.

Petrarca serves as a member of the American Meteorological Society. He holds the organization’s Broadcast Seal of Approval, the organization’s highest standard for a television meteorologist. The National Academy of Television Arts and Sciences recognized him with a Silver Circle Award in 2012 in recognition of his 30 years as a meteorologist.

Petrarca never truly left school, having visited over 600 elementary schools to teach children about weather over the past 27 years. With his impact and direction, some of these students decided to pursue weather in college.
Petrarca believes in giving back to the community in which he grew up, and he does just that. In this capacity, he has given his time to multiple charitable organizations, including the Tomorrow Fund, Meeting Street School, Hasbro Children’s Hospital, East Bay Coalition For The Homeless, The Fogarty Center, and Crossroads Homeless Shelter.
Petrarca annually co-hosts the Meeting Street Telethon. Also, he is an Eucharistic minister at Sacred Heart Church in West Warwick. He sat on the board of directors for the Multiple Sclerosis Society. He was a former host of the Jerry Lewis Muscular Dystrophy Association Telethon. In 2015, he won the “Sons of Italy Service Award.”
