Chuck Bell Career
Growing up outside Atlanta, Chuck became, at a young age, a weather enthusiast. The first weather recollection of Bell dates back to April 4, 1974, when he and his classmates spent the entire afternoon as a first-grade student in the “duck and cover” place in the hallway as tornadoes raged overhead causing storms. Bell was involved in anything and anything related to the weather from that point on.
There was only one school when it came time to choose a college that could have a weather experience as well as a weather education-The University of Oklahoma. It was time to hit the airwaves after years of storm chases from Texas to South Dakota and internships at TV stations in Oklahoma City, Boston, and Atlanta.
Bell’s broadcasting career included stops in Albany, GA, Greenville, SC. Until he hit NBC4, Roanoke, VA, and Oklahoma City, OK. The first “Storm of the Century”-the March 1993 storm that crippled the Western Carolinas and most of the East Coast-is among some of Bell’s favorite weather cases. In the Roanoke Valley, the “Blizzard of ’96” left 29″ of snow and Hurricane Isabel flooded the Chesapeake Bay in 2003.”
While he is a snow-lover who was perfectly pleased with Washington’s historic snowfall in the winter of 2009-2010, while working for KOKH-TV in Oklahoma City, his most memorable weather experience was the tornado outbreak in May 3, 1999.
Bell is an avid distance runner when he is not concentrating on the forecast. He has three times completed the Marine Corps Marathon in DC and plans to continue running it next year. He can often be seen cruising in downtown DC in his vintage 1962 Corvette when the weather is good. Having owned the car for 15 years, he only raced it a couple of times with the top-up.
