In a variety of technical roles, Harris started his career behind the scenes. His first major on-air reporting took place during the L.A. coverage. Disturbances. He anchored CNN’s morning programs from there, gaining praise for coverage of global news events such as the bombing of Oklahoma City, the O.J. The Simpson trial, the attacks of September 11, and the 2000 Elections and Recount. The National Cable Ace Award for Best Anchor was twice awarded to Harris.

Harris relocated to Washington in 2003 to cover local news at his adopted home. For his reporting and anchoring, he has earned over a dozen Local Emmys, including two as Best Anchor for Local News. He was also remembered for his coverage of Hurricane Katrina and his reporting on illegal immigration from El Salvador’s jungles.
