Jay Towers Career

Towers has served at Fox 2 and WNIC as a news anchor and as a morning radio host, respectively. He retired in the year 2020 after 35 years (1984 – 2020). At the age of 14, at WJRZ in Toms Rivers, New Jersey, he began his broadcasting journey.

When he turned 18, his first full-time radio show was at WAYV in Atlantic City, and then at Boss 97. Soon after his 20th birthday, he left the Jersey Shore and became one of America’s youngest program directors at WMAX in Grand Rapids. One year later, here in Detroit, he helped to launch 93.1 WDRQ.

He was called back to the east coast in the summer of 1997 to work as Music Director and afternoon host at Q102 in Philadelphia, but felt such a deep commitment to the city of Detroit that until 2005, he returned to 93.1 DRQ in 1999 to host ‘Jay Towers and the Morning Revolution.’

Before making 100.3 WNIC his last radio stop in 2010, he spent the next four years at 97.1 The Ticket hosting the “Jay & Bill” show with Bill McAllister. He continues to host “Jay Towers in the Morning” with Allyson and Chelsea every morning on 100.3 WNIC. On a Saturday morning, he was in the Fisher Building lobby to promote WDRQ’s “Lion King Musical Contest”. It was the first day that tickets went on sale and he was waiting to be interviewed about our contest by a Fox 2 reporter, but she never appeared.

The photographer gave me an earpiece and while interviewing the people in line, he spoke back to Deena Centofanti in the studio about all the excitement in the lobby. He was asked by the producer to do it a couple more times that morning.

He got a call from the News Director the following Monday asking him if he would be able to fill in for the next 2 weeks before a new feature reporter was hired and he has been at Fox 2 ever since. He’s had the time of his life, from Feature Reporter to Weekend Anchor to Morning Anchor.

The question he is asked most frequently is how every day, he does both Morning TV and Radio Together. He is fortunate enough to have his WNIC radio studio with Allyson and Chelsea a few steps away from the Fox 2 News Studio, thanks to such a strong collaboration between iHeart Radio and Fox 2. When you don’t see him for a few minutes on Fox 2 News Morning, chances are he’s talking on the radio in the studio next door.

The 1978 film ‘Superman The Movie,’ if you didn’t know, was his earliest childhood memory and his favorite. He is a total nerd of Superman and I’m not ashamed to admit that. Director Zack Snyder also got the attention of his super-obsession and he put me playing a Metropolis TV Reporter in “Batman v Superman” back in 2016.

In 2018, he hosted and created a TV special that earned an Emmy Nomination on the 40th anniversary of ‘Superman the Movie.’ He also began The Caped Wonder Superman Podcast with Jim Bowers, the historian of Superman. On iHeart Radio, iTunes, or wherever you listen to podcasts, you can find it.

Radio and TV blessed him with the chance, every day in Detroit, to have a really large forum. He is proud to be part of numerous charitable efforts throughout the year but he just wanted to use his voice to do something personal for me. He created the “Jay’s Juniors” program on WNIC in 2014.

The goal was to create a magical escape for children in Metro Detroit suffering from chronic or terminal illnesses by taking the whole family to Walt Disney World in Orlando, Florida on an all-expense-paid holiday. He’s been lucky enough since we started Jay’s Juniors to take over 100 families on trips at Christmas time. While some of our juniors have sadly passed away, our families have some of the most precious memories of our time together.
