DeFede serves at CBS4 as an investigative reporter. He also hosts “Facing South Florida,” a Sunday morning public affairs program. For his work on CBS4 News, he earned 5 regional Emmy Awards. He has reported on the 2016 presidential campaign traveling across Florida and to South Carolina and New Hampshire. Throughout the travel, he secured face-to-face interviews with Marco Rubio, Jeb Bush, and Donald Trump. 

At CBS4, he has been responsible for producing long-form reports such as 30-minute specials. Some of these specials include: “The Versace Murder: A South Beach Story,” on the twentieth anniversary of the murder of fashion designer, Andrew Cunanan (spree killer); “Life and Death at Zoo Miami,” on the treatment and care of animals at the zoo in Miami; and “Last Chance Boot Camp,” on the military style corrections center for young offenders in Florida. 

DeFede spent over 12 months working on a 60-minute documentary, “The Everglades: Where Politics, Money and Race Collide,” which CBS4 – WFOR-TV aired in August 2017. The documentary was based on the 2016 environmental disaster that struck the Treasure Coast, as well as its relation to the Everglades restoration. 

DeFede got his 1st on-air job in the year 1986, working for The Spokesman-Review in Spokane, Washington as a night cops reporter. In the year 1991, he went to work for Miami New Times, a weekly newspaper, as a staff writer. While there, he earned multiple awards during his 11-year tenure with the newspaper. He worked for The Miami Herald as a metro columnist for 3 years (2002-2005). DeFede has also served at Tina Brown’s Talk magazine as a contributing writer. 

DeFede’s work has appeared in Loft, Newsday, Radar, The (London) Independent, The New Republic, Key West Magazine, Newsday, Miami Monthly, and Mother Jones. For his education, DeFede was a student at Colorado State University but he did not graduate.

In June 2007, DeFede was missing in action on the radio for several days. On a Sunday, his colleague, Joan Fleischman announced in her Miami Herald gossip column that DeFede had undergone surgery to drain fluid that had been building up around his heart. She announced that at the time, he was recovering from the surgery at home. After his recovery, he explained that it all began with shortness of breath, someday before he disappeared.

He then went in for an echocardiogram later that same day, at Mercy Hospital. An echocardiogram is an ultrasound of the heart. The docs told said that “he was just hours away from death.” He underwent some treatments and, ultimately, was scheduled for surgery. Fortunately, the surgery was successful and he recovered.

After the surgery, DeFede said that despite the extra weight he carried, he was healthy and strong. He also stated that he needed to lose some weight to be on the safer side. Since then, he has been working on losing weight.
