Sauder’s fascination with weather began when he was a small child, the son of a fighter pilot. His father would come home from work wearing his flight suit and carrying his helmet under his arm, and John would often wonder what it was like to fly through the clouds. Sauder finally learned to fly and went on to become Winnipeg’s only radio pilot/traffic reporter, clocking nearly 8,000 hours in the air over a ten-year period.
He is a member of the National Weather Association and the American Meteorological Society, as well as the Canadian Meteorological and Oceanographic Society. John has also received the Seal of Approval for Weather casting from the American Meteorological Society.
Because he is the Honorary Colonel of the 2 Canadian Air Division, Winnipeggers may expect to see him in a flight suit or Royal Canadian Air Force uniform around town. Through his work with several local charities, John is dedicated to giving back to the community.
