Before joining WDBJ-TV, Major worked as a host of a radio show at Blaze Radio ASU in Tempe, Arizona, from September 2022 to June 2023, and simultaneously served as a Weather Anchor and Digital Producer at Cronkite News in Phoenix, Arizona, until June 2023. Before these roles, she engaged as a part-time employee at the Arizona State Climate Office and as a Weather Investigator at WEATHERATE, INC in Phoenix, Arizona.
During her time at ASU, she served as the President of the ASU Weather and Climate Club from March 2020 to June 2023. Additionally, her internships included significant stints at CNN in Atlanta as a Weather and Climate Intern and at MadridMedia in Phoenix.
Payton has been fascinated with the weather ever since she was at the age of 12. She decided she wanted to become a meteorologist after she visited a local news station in her hometown. She experienced the intense heat of the Southwest when she went to college. During her internship there, she was responsible for writing digital stories about climate and weather and making forecasts for major storms worldwide. Major is a member of the NWA – National Weather Association and the AMS – American Meteorological Society.
