In the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks, Burkett together with his photographer narrowly escaped the subsequent collapse of the South Tower, after 2 jets struck the World Trade Center. Their excellent work appeared on TV news broadcasts across the nation and across the world and is on permanent exhibit at the Newseum in Washington DC.
In the year 2003, Burkett spent about 3 months reporting on the Iraq war, following the military build-up. She reported on the terrorist bombings in London and Madrid, in 2005 and 2004 respectively. Also, she covered; the 2006 war between Hezbollah and Israel in Southern Lebanon; 3 Israeli national elections; Yasir Arafat (Palestinian leader)’s death in 2004.
In the year 2011, Burkett was the only local New York TV news correspondent, to provide live coverage of the aftermath of the nuclear accident, tsunami, and the historic 9.0 earthquake, in Japan. Also, he was one of the 1st reporters to report the aftermath of the 2010 earthquake in Haiti. Burkett has been among the ABC7NY’s lead reporters to cover many of the region’s most significant stories such as; the crash of TWA Flight 800, landmark police misconduct trials, Superstorm Sandy, and the massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Burkett is the 1st Vice Chairman of the National Academy of Television Arts & Sciences. Formerly, he was a Board Trustee for WBGO and was the President of the Academy’s flagship chapter in New York. He has worked for a CBS Affiliate, WFSB-TV in Hartford, Connecticut as a correspondent for 3 years (1986-1989).
