He got hooked on severe weather on May 3, 1999, when the deadly F-5 tornado struck his hometown Moore, Oklahoma. In the year 1989, he experienced a near-miss with the devastating Hurricane Hugo in Jacksonville, Florida. He has been chasing storms in Oklahoma since the year 2007. Smith says that Monday afternoon, May 20th, 2013, was a tough day for him and the people of Oklahoma. He says that they watched his community in South Oklahoma City and Moore hit by an EF-5 Tornado.
Smith has worked for various organizations and families in the community. He assisted in bringing immediate relief with restoration for numerous families who had many losses during the time of the EF-5 Tornado. Smith had a chance to assist in providing Hurricane relief with Hurricanes Michael and Florence in the year 2018, where he worked with the Salvation Army. He together with his fellow KOCO’s First Alert storm chasers, are committed and dedicated to serving the community.
