He started his on-air career in his hometown of Michigan, Flint, where he was the weekend meteorologist for WJRT-TV, the local ABC affiliate. He as well owned and operated a private weather forecasting service with several clients throughout the Midwest during this time.
A participant in multiple volunteer activities, he is a board member of the Les Turner ALS Foundation. This charitable group raises money to help those afflicted with ALS and as well contributes to the research being conducted at Northwestern University. All of the cash raised through this charity remains within the Chicago area. Each year he emcees the ALS Walk for Life that’s held in late September.

Schwarz was working for ABC 7 Chicago serving the station as a Weekend Weather Anchor and Weekday Fill-In Weather Anchor. He left the station on the 2nd of March 2023. Stacey Baca shared on her Facebook Page that after about 21 years of working with ABC 7, Phil had made a decision to leave ABC 7 News. Schwarz stated that it was bittersweet saying goodbye to ABC 7 News. He made a decision to retire Wednesday and celebrated his final day and looked back on his outstanding career.
