Before her television career, Rieger’s voice and writing style set her up as a rising radio star. At WAMU, Washington’s NPR station, a short period as a writer led to a stint as host of the Morning Edition of the station. She later anchored NPR and WTOP Radio’s newscasts. Her TV career started in the Washington Bureau of CNN.
Rieger has known herself as a solid reporter, aside from anchoring. Her Going Green segments were so common for many years that during their newscasts, NBC stations around the country aired them and spawned a series on NBC Nightly News. A story Rieger made in 2005 about a woman who became allergic to her own house and the eco-ways she learned to combat her bad reactions was the idea for this weekly series.
In April 2008, readers of Washington magazine presented one of its inaugural Green Awards to Rieger in recognition of her contribution to “preserving our environment through education.”
Three Emmy Awards were given to Rieger, including one for a special report she shot on home video in Vietnam 20 years after the war. A Norfolk native, Rieger graduated with a degree in broadcast journalism from American University. Many local organizations, including those dedicated to combating cancer, saving animals, and upholding human rights, have been active in her community engagement. By engaging in three DC AIDS Rides, she joined her NBC4 colleagues.
