She retired from her journalism career in November 2022. She had announced her retirement in October of that year. Before joining NBC4 in 1989, she spent several years honing her reporting and anchoring abilities in Chattanooga, Charlotte, and Cleveland, then in Philadelphia at WCAU. For vacation news anchors on “The Today Show” and “NBC at Sunrise,” Gentzler also filled in.
Gentzler has brought viewers into hospital operating rooms in her award-winning News 4 Your Health segments, profiled medical breakthroughs, and demonstrated the latest technology that helps save lives. She was taken to Bosnia, Ecuador, and the Persian Gulf by her broadcasting, reporting live from the USNS Comfort, a navy hospital ship serving U.S. troops.
Gentzler has been the lead reporter for a station-wide mental health project called “Changing Minds” since May 2014. The project has garnered local and national recognition for highlighting a wide range of mental illness-related issues, a topic that can be difficult to cover in a TV news format. Changing Minds has taken us in many directions, but the aim is to reduce the mental illness-related stigma.
Gentzler is also the spokeswoman for community outreach programs related to the wellness of the station, such as the annual NBC4 Health and Fitness Expo. As well as three other Emmy awards for news writing and broadcasting while in Cleveland, Gentzler has received numerous local Emmy awards for broadcasting and anchoring.
