Whitfield serves at CNN as the anchor of the weekend edition of CNN Newsroom from CNN’s world headquarters in Atlanta. She has worked as a journalist for over thirty years. Her reporting ranges from covering stories from the 2000 Bush-Gore presidential race and recount, the 2008 Inauguration of President Barack Obama, the Afghanistan War and the start of the second Iraq War, the Atlanta, Beijing, and London Olympic Games,  the 50th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act in Selma Alabama, the 50th anniversary of Voting Rights Act in Selma Alabama, the Kosovo War refugee crisis, the 2016 Presidential primary races, and Democratic National Convention. Breaking news coverage includes Va. municipal building mass shooting, and the recent Virginia Beach. She benefited greatly from early life exposure to global living and awareness. 

 Before joining CNN, she served as a correspondent for NBC News and served as an Atlanta-based correspondent for The Today Show, Dateline NBC, and NBC Nightly News. DuPont Award-winning team for CNN’s coverage of the tsunami disaster in Southeast Asia, and 2005 Ebony award for Outstanding Women in Marketing and Communications.

During the Peabody Award-winning coverage of the 2010 Gulf Oil Spill and the 2011 Arab Spring, she was part of the network’s team to cover the event.  Furthermore, she was nominated for an NAACP Image Award as Outstanding Host in a Talk or News/Information Series in 2017, and she was named a 60th Anniversary Honorary Board Member of Alvin Ailey Dance Theater in 2019. When coming to her education, she attended  Howard University where she earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism.
