In 1992, Handly joined News4, anchoring the launch of News4 Today’s weekend editions and then the launch of News4 at 4, the area’s first 4 p.m. Newscasting. Since 2006, Handly has been anchoring News4 at 5 and, since 2016, News4 at 11.
Throughout his career, which has taken him to the Middle East, Russia, and the Caribbean, he has been honored with numerous Emmy Awards. He’s also broadcast live in the Washington, D.C., area on major breaking news reports. He has covered seven opportunities along the way, countless election nights, four U.S. papal visits, and, as a resident of Florida, his share of hurricanes. The Olympics, the Super Bowl, and most of all, the Nations and Caps championship festivities were also celebrated by Handly.
Handly was active with many organizations during his time with Washington, including the Washington Tennis and Education Foundation, the Humane Rescue Alliance, the Junior Tennis Champions Center in Maryland, and Thanks USA, which provides military soldiers’ families with scholarships. He has been hosting the Blue Bird Blues Festival in Prince George’s County for 20 + years.
Prior to moving to Washington, Handly worked in Hartford / New Haven, Connecticut, as an anchor and reporter for the CBS affiliate. Anchoring and reporting for WPTV, the NBC affiliate in West Palm Beach, Florida, he began his broadcasting career. Handly is a competitive tennis player of the set who likes to engage in charity tennis events.
