Barnes serves at NBC4 as the morning news co-anchor, a role he has held since January 2016. He joined the NBC4 staff as a sports anchor and reporter. In the summer of 2007, Matt started his broadcasting career at NBC4 as an intern, working in the sports department, and learning all the ins and outs of the TV industry.
After college, Matt worked as a sports anchor/reporter at WRDW-TV in Augusta, GA, covering various sporting events, including the Master’s tournament. Matt said his greatest thrill was twice playing Augusta National and both times shooting over 100.
His favorite aspect of being on TV is being able to tell stories about people. Matt knows everyone has a unique story to tell, whether it’s talking to someone making a difference in their neighborhood, a young person facing a terminal illness, or an athlete competing for a championship.
He is an avid volunteer and supporter of Columbus’s Ronald McDonald House. He also works with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Ohio as a mentor and was named the Big Brother of the Year for Ohio 2020. You could also see him speaking to schools across the city, including Indianola Primary, Johnson Park Middle, and Bishop Hartley High, his alma maters.
