Bettes serves at The Weather Channel as a meteorologist and storm chaser. Before joining The Weather Channel, he worked as a co-host of AMHQ: America’s Morning Headquarters. Since he started on The Weather Channel in 2003, including the Joplin, Missouri tornado in 2011 and the El Reno, Oklahoma tornado in 2013, he has reported almost every significant weather occurrence. He was part of the biggest tornado field trial in history, Vortex 2, in 2009 and 2010, to further explain this enigmatic phenomenon better.
Bettes has covered virtually every form of weather possible throughout his career. He’s been working on-site during blizzards, flooding, and wildfires, and he frequently covers hurricanes. He witnessed some of the strongest hurricanes in U.S. history during his time on The Weather Channel. He was blogging live from Florida in 2004 when Hurricane Ivan arrived.
During Hurricane Katrina in 2005, he spent a week along the Mississippi Coast. He personally registered a 101mph wind in 2008 when Texas was struck by Hurricane Ike. 2017 proved to be an extremely deadly season for hurricanes.
As Hurricane Harvey’s rain overwhelmed much of Southeast Texas, Mike was on the scene. Just two weeks later, for 90 straight minutes, Mike broadcast inside the eyewall of Hurricane Irma in Naples, Florida, where winds at 130 mph were reported. Mike was staying in the Panhandle when Category 5 Hurricane Michael struck Florida. Bettes was formerly WLOS-chief TV meteorologist in Asheville, NC.
He formerly spent four years as a WSYX/WTTE weekend meteorologist in Columbus, Ohio, and one year as a WKEF weekend meteorologist in Dayton, Ohio. Bettes owns licensing seals from the American Meteorological Society and the National Weather Association. Mike likes to watch college football in his free time and work out.
He also loves hiking, paddle boarding, triathlons, and mountain biking. He was also considered to have spoiled Joplyn, his Golden Retriever.
