Paul Cook Career
Paul Cook is the managing editor of 680News and co-anchor of the morning show. He has been a full-time member of the Rogers radio family since 1985 and has anchored the morning drive shift since 1997. Every weekday morning from 5:30 a.m. until 9:30 a.m., he is on the radio.
Paul enjoys his job, despite the fact that waking up in the middle of the night can be exhausting. “It makes me feel useful.” When people wake up in the morning, the first thing they want to know is whether or not their surroundings are safe. I’m the one who gets to answer the question. That is not a task I take lightly. Once we’ve established that it is, we can educate folks on what they need to know in order to have a productive conversation about current events at work. Let’s face it, many of our listeners are parents with young children who don’t have time to read the newspaper before rushing out the door.”
While the morning show’s subject matter can be serious, Paul says he and his coworkers try not to take themselves too seriously. “We make fun of each other and ourselves all the time on the air.” Some listeners have asked if it is pre-planned, and I can honestly state that it isn’t. That’s half the fun, after all. We have no idea what to expect from one another. We take pride in being authentic and not projecting a stuffy on-air persona.”
Paul has also worked in the television industry. He hosted Agenda, a one-hour public affairs show that ran on MSNBC Canada and afterwards on Omni and Rogers Cable, for three years. He’s also been a guest host on Goldhawk, a TV call-in show.
Paul served as a reporter/producer/co-host for CHFI’s daily public affairs show, Chronicle, and on the nationally syndicated news magazine, Sunday Sunday, before joining the 680News team. As a reporter, he has won honors for his on-the-ground coverage of the RAF Nimrod’s crash at the International Air Show in Toronto, as well as his coverage of the Meech Lake constitutional issue. The Barcelona Olympics and Diana, Princess of Wales’ funeral in London, England were among her international reporting assignments.
Paul’s finest professional achievements include being a part of the team that helped 680News reach a million listeners for the first time in 2001 and winning the Edward R. Murrow Award for best radio newscast in the world from the International Radio and Television News Director’s Association.
His eight marathons, including two in New York City, are his biggest personal achievements. Although he was born in Hamilton, he spent his childhood in Huntsville and North Bay. He currently works at CityNews Toronto alongside;
