While in school he became an Eagle Scout, senior class vice president, a tight end on the high school football team, and a two-year member of the National Honor Society. Later on, he attended the University of Delaware where he majored in political science from 1988 through the spring of 1993. He did not pass the maths course hence he left three credits short of graduating. He stated that higher maths is hard for him because he had been diagnosed with learning disabilities.
Furthermore, was a member of the campus Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) program, joined the Delta Tau Delta fraternity, and did fieldwork for Republican candidates in Delaware. Finally, he graduated in 2013, after he was able to finish his final maths course.

Schmidt serves at MSNBC and NBC News as a political analyst. While at MSNBC, he founded a podcast, Words Matter, along with fellow MSNBC contributor Elise Jordan, but he later left a protest of an on-air interview about Schultz. As a political strategist, he served in political campaigns such as those of; California Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Arizona Senator John McCain, and President George W. Bush.
In the year 2018, he was the senior campaign strategist and advisor to McCain’s presidential campaign. He did convince McCain to select Sarah Palin as his running mate, and this was a decision that both of them came to regret. In addition, he served as the Vice-chair at the public relations firm Edelman and later on in July 2018, he stepped down. He had extremely criticized former President Trump and the GOP for supporting him. His disagreement with former President Donald Trump and his followers led him to establish The Lincoln Project. He disclosed on December 14, 2020, that he is registering as a member of the Democratic Party in a podcast.
He managed a campaign for Kentucky Attorney General Will T. Scott, a former Justice of the Kentucky Supreme Court which was unsuccessful. The campaign was featured in the second edition of George Magazine. In addition, he was in charge of California State Senator Tim Leslie’s race for Lt. Governor of California in 1998, which was unsuccessful. Prior to being the Communications Director for California State Treasurer Matt Fong’s unsuccessful campaign to unseat U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer.
He served as a communications director of the House Committee on Energy and Commerce by late 2000. In addition, served as the National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman, and later on, in 2002, he became the Communications Director. He joined the Bush administration as a Deputy Assistant to the President and Counselor to Vice President Dick Cheney. Additionally, he was the White House strategist responsible for the U.S. Supreme Court nominations of Samuel Alito and Chief Justice John Roberts in 2005 and 2006.
He’s the founding member of The Lincoln Project, a Super PAC organized by former Republican operatives opposed to the re-election of Donald Trump. In addition, it supported the Democratic Presidential Nominee Joe Biden. In 2020, Schmidt and members of The Lincoln Project guest-starred on Showtime’s The Circus: Inside the Greatest Political Show on Earth which gave viewers an insight into their strategies.
